We believe life is a commitment to improve and elevate the character of humanity through service and example. As Odd Fellows, we promote the principles of friendship, love, truth, faith, hope, charity, and universal justice. We aim to make the world a better place, and to harmonize goodwill amongst all.
The command of the IOOF is to visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan.
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is one of the oldest and largest fraternities in the world. We are non-political and non-sectarian. Membership is open to all regardless of sex, race, religion, political affiliation and social status -all bound by the desire to improve ourselves and the calling to live and promote the principles of Friendship, Love, and Truth which transcends labels. We believe that by developing close friendships among each other and by working together in our communities, we can make a difference in the world and among ourselves! Discussing political, sectarian or any other debate is forbidden in the Lodge, so it breaks down the social walls and labels used to view others and opens hearts and minds to start seeing people as Brothers and Sisters.
Social Activities
One of the primary purposes of IOOF is to develop life-lasting friendships among people. In connection to this, many lodges also organize social activities where members can enjoy each other’s company. An ideal lodge is a place for fellowship in all its forms – from meetings, to Initiation ceremonies, to dinners, to hanging out and just having fun, to discussion and collaboration on creative and constructive projects, all with an eye not only on our own satisfaction but on what we might offer to the community at large. We aim to be a good venue for a lot of positive energy and all members are encouraged to contribute their ideas in harmony.
Philanthropic Projects
The first lodges were first set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was still no welfare state, trade unions or national health insurance. The aim was and still is to provide help to people and communities in times of need. The Odd Fellows are also large fundraisers for local, national and international charities.
Today, the highlights of the fraternal organization’s Philanthropic works include:
A Philosophy for Life
We are a diverse group of people who want to make a difference in our communities and the world by turning the lessons taught in our Initiation and Degrees into direct action.
The degrees of initiation in our fraternity seek to improve and elevate the character of members by imparting moral principles exemplified through story, drama and symbols which we adapted from the Medieval Trade Guilds.
Our lessons aim to promote the lesson of tolerance which results to harmony and understanding between people from different walks of life. We endeavor to bridge the gap of differences and serve as venue where acquaintances and even enemies can become true friends using the purest and practical form of fraternity. We are simply about promoting the culture of caring and sharing, of not leaving each other behind, of thinking beyond self, and of helping others in need. The command of IOOF is to “visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan.”
The Original “Social Network”
The Lodge provides a place to foster new friendships with people you can depend on. The structure provides a way to learn valuable skills that carry over into all areas of life and the flexibility makes each Lodge have its own unique culture. Members also enjoy an international social network of many thousands that extends to more than 30 countries worldwide. If traveling is an interest, membership can provide a valuable network that will very much welcome an international visitor, and assist in their enterprises, and certainly their travels wherever possible. Members can attend a meeting at any IOOF Lodge in the world.
As part of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Grand Lodge I.O.O.F. of Texas aims to provide a framework that promotes personal and social development.
Lodge degrees and activities aim to improve and elevate every person to a higher, nobler plane; to extend sympathy and aid to those in need, making their burdens lighter, relieving the darkness of despair; to war against vice in every form, and to be a great moral power and influence for the good of humanity.
For members, the degrees in Odd Fellowship emphasize a leaving of the old life and the start of a better one, of welcoming travelers, and of helping those in need.
The command of the IOOF is to “visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead, and educate the orphan.” Specifically, IOOF today is dedicated to the following purposes:
Ideally, an Odd Fellows Lodge is a place for fellowship in all its forms, from hanging out and just having fun, to discussion, to networking, to collaboration on creative and constructive projects, all with an eye not only on our own satisfaction but on what we might offer to the community at large.
An ideal lodge is a great venue for a lot of positive energy, and all members are encouraged to contribute their share.
In addition, lodges provide an international social network of brothers and sisters that extends to 30 countries worldwide. If traveling is an interest, membership can provide a valuable network that will very much welcome an international visitor and assist in their enterprises and, certainly, their travels wherever possible.
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is a fraternal organization, known as the three link fraternity. We strive to make the world a better place in which to live. Our emblem of Odd Fellowship is the three links with “F, L,& T “. The three links symbolizes the chain that binds our members together and illustrates that a fraternity is strongest when joined together. The ‘F’ in the first link represents ‘friendship’, the strongest bond of fraternity that teaches good-will and harmony. The ‘L’ represents ‘love’, the basis for all life’s ambitions, service to others and family. The ‘T’ represents ‘truth’, the standard by which we value people and the foundation of our society.
Odd Fellowship signifies belief in a Supreme Being and in the Brotherhood and sisterhood of Mankind. These two beliefs are the only “requirements” for membership. The Order has no interest in denominational or political affiliations.
The Order is, and shall forever continue to be, bound to charitable and beneficent works, in visiting the sick, relieving the distressed, burying the dead, and educating the orphan and in the performance of all those reciprocal duties, which spring from our recognition of a Supreme Being.
Odd Fellowship is dedicated to broadening of the mind and the elevation of character without taking from the individual any of his/her rights or privileges or the duties each owes to his/her God or country. Odd Fellowship is the teaching and application of Friendship, Love, and Truth; of Faith, Hope, and Charity; and of Universal Justice. These are the principles of the Order’s doctrine, the basis for thought and action which will create peace and harmony among all peoples.
Odd Fellowship means social and international brotherhood and sisterhood. Odd Fellowship means service with no other hope of reward than the joy of a good deed well done and the memories, which sweeten the soul and elevate the character of humanity.
We also have a branch known as the Rebekahs. Originally they were known as the Daughters of Rebekah, and were the female auxiliary of the IOOF, but now both females and males are allowed in either of the branches. The general duties of the members of this unit are, “To live peaceably, do good unto all, as we have opportunity and especially to obey the Golden Rule, Whatsoever ye would that others should do unto you, do ye even so unto them.

REBEKAH CREED
I believe in the Fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of man and the sisterhood of women.
I believe in the watch-words of our Order; Friendship, Love, and Truth.
Friendship is like a golden chain that ties our hearts together.
Love is one of our most precious gifts, the more you give, the more you receive.
Truth is the standard by which we value people, It is the foundation of our Society.
I believe that my main concern should be my God, my family and my friends;
Then I should reach out to my community and the world.
For in God's eyes we are all brothers and sisters.
I AM A REBEKAH!
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows has several youth programs for youth ages 8-18. Once a young person reaches 16 years of age they are eligible to join with an Odd Fellow or Rebekahs lodge. There are 3 different youth organizations for young people.
Jr. Odd Fellows are young men ages 8-18, they participate in their own degrees and lodge meetings similar to the Odd Fellow lodges. Theta Rho Clubs are for young women ages 8-18, they also participate in their own degrees and lodge meetings similar to the Rebekahs. United Youth Groups are co-ed for youth 8-18 and do not include ritual work.
Our youth programs help instill important character values in our youth like friendship, love, truth, faith, hope, charity and universal justice for all. They are expected to emulate important values such as; "The Golden Rule.” Youth are given the opportunity to be leaders and provide service in their communities. Many states have summer camp programs for their youth groups, where young people can develop positive lifelong friendships.
Throughout most of the free world is an organization known, loved and respected for the great good it has done for those in need and for its humanitarian efforts to make the entire world a better place to live. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is truly an organization which believes and practices the axiom, "Am I my Brother's Keeper?"
The Three Links represent a worldwide chain that binds men, women and the youth of our organization together in fraternal devotion to God and their fellow man. The three links, representing: Friendship, Love and Truth, are the cornerstone upon which the Odd Fellows (and their various auxiliaries, Rebekah’s, Jr. Odd Fellows, Theta Rho Girl’s Club) of the world have built their Order.
The Pyramid: Reminds us of the land of Pharaoh, where Joseph, as a young boy, attained great heights.
The All-Seeing Eye:
Reminds us of our belief of the Supreme Intelligent Being, the Creator and Preserver of the Universe.
The Three Links: Reminds us that through Fidelity, Honor and Loyalty we are to unite and elevate the character of our members.
The Silver Drinking Cup: Reminds us that through all our trials we are to remain patient, obedient, and tolerant.
The Six Leaves: divided in halves, reminds us of the twelve tribes of Israel, who from lowly slaves, rose to become a great nation.
